I've been using a GoPro Hero 8 Black to record on-road videos. Everyone has told you about battery issues so I'll focus about the other stuff that you might need to know. When using as a dashcam, depending on the vehicle you use and where would you mount it, the dashboard reflection might ruin your footage.

But to keep the GoPro configuration and dashcam functionality flexible, we don’t force the camera into a particular shooting mode. Rather, it will just use the default power on mode that you have set for the camera.
The unit is waterproof to the same as past GoPro’s (10m I believe off-hand), via USB-C you can charge and use an external battery, but it’s a pain with the batter door. There was a 3rd party battery door I’ve used in the past which has a hole in it, but it’ll take a bit for that to become available for the Hero 9 probably.
I use my gopro (first gen hero) as a dashcam. There are some definite benefits to a regular dashcam if you're going to run it all the timeconvenience, power, and recording options, basically. Auto-rewrite is a great feature, as is 12v power. I also don't want to leave a gopro in plain sight, whereas a >$100 dashcam wouldn't be as big a deal.
That way you can see exactly the field of view the dash cam will record, and adjust its positioning before it's permanently stuck to your windscreen. 3: Attaching camera to windscreen. The procedure here will vary depending on your dash cam. The likely fixing methods will be a super-sticky adhesive pad, or a suction mount.
Dashcam. Ideal for monitoring traffic for security and insurance purposes. Generally cheaper than GoPro cameras. Turns on and records automatically. Don't need to bring it with you or turn it on before drives. GoPro cameras are generally more expensive than dashcams and aren't designed to sit indefinitely in a vehicle.
For example, a Gopro type action camera tends to have better streaming capabilities. With my DJI app it can livestream pretty solid 720p HD via the phone app directly to youtube. Other action cams I have used have HDMI out or USB webcam feature and can combo with a computer and a hotspot for 1080p+ quality.
